born free - charity single
born free The incarnation of this song can be traced back to 2006/7, when Pete was still living in Derby with previous girlfriend, Carina Pearson.
They were watching a documentary about the Born Free Foundation and it's work to liberate suffering animals, found in appalling conditions throughout the world.
They were both so moved by the film, that Carina wrote a short poem and Pete liked it so much, he decided to put her words to music, and began writing a song to accommodate the prose.

Fast forward 11 years or so, and Pete finally resolved to finished the song, and lyrics. The first four lines of the song, are taken directly from Carina's poem - She is credited on the single liner notes - and save for the opening arpeggios and chord progression in the verses, Pete scrapped everything else that was written all that time ago, and essentially started over from scratch.

the rest is history
A reasonable question would be... "why did it take so long to finish one song" Well, simply put, life happens. In 2008 Carina and Pete separated. Shortly before that, he'd joined Threshold, and from 2009 onwards, he was either constantly writing and recording new music or touring extensively across many different bands.
At one point around 2010, he was working with 5 different groups.
Thus, both the incentive and the time to do the song properly, never really presented itself, until early 2018.
Interestingly, despite the busy work period of 11 years or so, this song was never far from making it onto Pete's 'to-do' list.
So, after the release of 'Engines....' it was decided that 2018 would be the year that it would finally be finished. The re-working of the song, began in earnest, in early 2018, and was recorded between 28th June - 14th August 2018 at Rare Artist Studios, UK.
The song was produced mixed and mastered by Rob Aubrey at Aubitt Studios between the 16th and 17th August 2018. 140 mile sponsored bike ride
As well as all proceeds of the single sale going to the foundation, Pete also decided to do a long distance sponsored bike ride, as further support for Born Free's efforts to protect endangered species both in the wild and in captivity. muscians Pete Morten Vocals Guitars Keyboards
